Born in 1953, Carlo Chinca studied fine art at Bath Academy of Art - finally choosing photography as his vocation. He worked as a freelance for his local newspaper and then had the opportunity to move to London in the mid 1970’s. Carlo worked as an assistant to theatre photographer Zöe Dominic and part time with the photographic unit at the BBC Open University at Alexandra Palace while freelancing for magazines and record companies. He was awarded a Gold Medal for monochrome photography by Nikon Cameras in 1986. Carlo then moved to Spain developing his interests in Spanish Culture.

While freelancing for Lookout Magazine and BBC TV he began writing short articles to accompany his photographs. His pictures were syndicated by Camera Press. After 5 years he returned to the UK working with BBC TV and various magazines. His work has been published Comic Relief, Radio Times, Telegraph Magazine, Life, Country Life, Footprint Handbooks and The Independent.

Carlo has always enjoyed working on photo-essay projects (Inside The Household Cavalry Tuna fishing - Sicily, New York 9/11) so the opportunity to travel to Uganda for a month was a welcome challenge. It was 10 years since dictator Idi Amin had been driven to exile. The effects of war were still visible; banditry was common so driving at night was a risk. Carlo travelled with a child sponsorship group who helped struggling Ugandan parents get their children an education. War still continued in the north of the country and the AIDS pandemic continued taking its toll. These photographs show the everyday life of people braving a new future, trying to get on with their lives.
