THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULLY BOOKED
Brian Steptoe FRPS is an established expert in the creation of photobooks.
The promotional talk is aimed at encouraging RPS Members to submit entries to the Society Photobook Exhibition 2014 which closes on 1 September 2014. Details on how to enter are on the new website under "Exhibitions and Competitions" > "COMPETITIONS" > "PHOTOBOOK EXHIBITION" and you will find a blog by Brian Steptoe describing the rise of photobooks..
The photobook design workshop will comprise a presentation after which participants will form into groups around tables and sequence a set of 50 paper prints plus some blanks for white pages. Brian Steptoe will circulate around the groups and advise as they go along.
Emphasis will be placed on the need to edit and sequence images, together with reasons for this. Many photobooks fail because book design software encourages photographers to rush into this before they have done the necessary preparation that makes the difference between a good and average photobook. The workshop will also cover text and caption colouring and placement, the use of differing size images on different pages, inserting folded image content, reasons for inserting blank pages and cross page spreads and full image bleeds. These and others are the features that lift a template style book to a higher level.
Examples of award winning photobooks will be available for examination and will be a source for discussion and audience questions.
The talk and workshop is also relevant to anyone thinking of a hand-made book.
The event will commence at 11:00 am and finish about 3:00 pm.
To register, please contact the Regional Organiser Mo Connelly by e-mail to DVJ@rps.org.
As the event is limited to 40 people, it would be advisable to register early.
