Each year the town of Arles on France stages the Rencontres de la Photographie showing “historic and contemporary artistic practices in a festive and educational spirit”.
Numerous exhibitions take place around and outside the town; these vary from old photographs and retrospectives, to work by young photographers – some of which may be quite incomprehensible – but there is always something there that will appeal. In addition there is much in the area to explore and enjoy, Les Baux Avignon, The Camargue, Aigues Mortes, Les Saintes Maries-de-la-mar, and much more.
The weather in July will be hot, but bars and cafes provide relief, not to mention ice cream, which is offered in a variety of flavours! The Rencontres is worth a visit, even if only once.
This is as far removed from ’club’ and the other (RPS) sorts of photography as you can get, and is a reminder that there is a world out there where photography is used to explore and express.
The cost of £2050 is all inclusive for two people sharing. There is a single supplement of £200. To book, please contact the event organisers.
