Our walk is linear on a metalled single private track. There will be vans and cars, but very few, just serving the water board house and the odd farm.

The lower reservoir is in woodland. The upper reservoir is on hill land.

Winter birds might be: pied and grey wagtails, dipper, redpoll, stock dove, kite, buzzard and woodland birds.

I can’t pretend that poor weather is not a hazard. If we are lucky with some sunlight, you will find this a pleasing day out. Lenses between 24mm and 130 will cover most eventualities. A grad to help cope with the sky.

Meeting point: Lower Lliw Reservoir Felindre

There are roundabouts immediately north and south of the motorway here. You want the roundabout just north of the m’way. Leave it going north on the B4489, which is probably signed Felindre (English spelling and pronunciation Velindre). Go north and downhill (a new road) a short distance to a roundabout which only has one exit: at nine o’clock. Take it. The sign is probably for Felindre. I recall the road (still a new road) sweeping right and then left, probably showing industrial development in its early stages on your left. At the next roundabout you come off at three o’clock (still on the B4489) and you are now on an old road, barely wider than a lane but the main way to Felindre. Drive 2kms (OK, a mile and a half) between woods and fields. Expect bad driving, notably from crazed youngsters coming the other way too fast. As you go downhill and sense that the first houses or bungalows are on the fringe of the village, look for a sharp right turn, perhaps signed for the reservoirs or the water works. Now you should have no difficulty. Follow the road until you find the water works and, to the left, a sign to the reservoirs. Take it. The road surface is very poor. At the lower reservoir you park – probably free, I recall. There are lavatories and a café, but I have not checked their status in October.

Bring a packed lunch and hot drinks.
