Image (c) Simon Weir

An acknowledged expert in the field of Infrared photography, Simon's workshop will give you a thorough understanding of the magical world of digital infrared.

Simon will cover the history of IR, the physics of IR imaging, film vs. digital-based IR, acquisition with modified and unmodified cameras, camera modification and lens selection, the problems of focus and hot-spots, subject matter and typical post-production workflows.  During the practical session attendees will have the chance to shoot with unmodified and modified infrared cameras and work on those images in a post-production session. The day will end with a presentation of some of Simon’s striking infrared images from around the world.

The rough plan for the day is as follows:

10:00 Introductions and get to know everyone and what gear/experience they have
10:30 A look at the 100+ year history and the science behind Infrared photography
11:30 Tea break
11:45 Briefing before heading over to Sandwell Valley Country Park to shoot some InfraRed (approx. 20 min drive)
13:30 Lunch at the park café followed by more photography
15:00 Return to Smethwick PS for a brief introduction to IR processing
15:30 Time to offload and process images. Simon will be on hand to helpRefreshments will be available to purchase during this session.
16:30 Image review - one or two images form each participant (optional) - open discussion
17:30 Presentation of Simon's own IR portfolio followed by Q&A
18:30 End

What to bring:

  • Digital camera - either a DSLR or a mirrorless camera - this should be a normal unconverted visible light camera.
  • If any participants have a converted camera also bring that but Simon will have a selection of IR modified cameras for people to try out.
  • Tripod - essential for IR shooting with an unconverted camera.
  • An InfraRed filter - Simon will have some to lend but not enough for everyone. He recommends the Cokin P007 filter for beginners
  • Memory cards (if you want to try any of my cameras you will need both SD and CF cards)
  • Laptop for postproduction session
  • Warm clothes!

Please note that there will be parking and entrance fees of up to £5 per person / vehicle at the country park.

This is a Group D event which means workshops that primarily focus on technique and where location is a secondary consideration.  These may take place indoors or outdoors.  The workshop leader may have limited knowledge of the location but will be experienced and skilled in the topic of the workshop.
