Monica Alcazar-Duarte’s photography work combines film, sound, installation and new technologies to draw attention to how much we all need to develop a more ‘curatorial gaze’. She invites audiences to look at what appears as disconnected, or even contradictory, with a discerning eye.

Her three-part project on space draws imagery from a large range of subjects in an attempt to discuss the very complex nature of humanity and its love affair with space travel.

Alcazar-Duarte’s uses Augmented Reality in this series as a way of discussing the transformative quality of the time in which we live and to acknowledge the technical complexity of our age.

In this talk she will present her book The New Colonists, the first chapter of her space work along with chapter two, Ascension, the work presented in the exhibition.  Finally, she will discuss future plans for the third and final chapter of her space trilogy and the importance of developing documentary work at a time of post-truth and fake news.

A former charity campaigner, she currently works on independent research projects and for NGOs in England and abroad. In 2017 she was winner of The Photographers’ Gallery Bar-Tur Photobook Award. In 2018 she was awarded the Royal Photographic Society 100 Heroines, as well as been shortlisted for Les Recontres d’Arles New Discovery Award. Currently she is a nominator for the Joop Swart Masterclass.
