Martin Parr - Soviet Space Dog Memorabilia

These objects tell the story of the earliest space flights, the first of which took place in 1951. The Soviets loved and respected the bravery and valour of these little dogs and so they were very popular and appeared on all kinds of objects like confectionary tins and cigarette packaging.  The photographs of these dogs became iconic images.

Martin Parr is talking about his latest publication, Space Dogs based on items from his own personal collection of Soviet Memorabilia. In a regime that eschewed celebrating individual achievement, these dogs became Soviet superstars, with a vast array of merchandise, books and films in their honour.  Martin Parr has also loaned The RPS Space Stepsexhibition items of Soviet and Apollo 11 memorabilia. Debbie Ireland will talk about the Apollo 11 items.
