MOUNTING – FRAMING – DISPLAY – EXHIBITION
WORKSHOP

Introduction/Tutor

Your tutor has an active interest in photography & art and enjoys the concept of being able to take the creation of an image to the next stage that requires consideration as to how it can be best presented and/or exhibited.

Awarded a Master of Art Degree at the Royal College of Art (MA RCA), a Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) from Leeds University, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Member of the Institute for Learning (MIfl), with a wide ranging experience relating to art & design (professional practice & Education) and the profession of mounting, framing, display and exhibition.

Quite simply a photographic image encapsulated within a suitable mount/frame or applied to some other form of display creation will provide a more complete presentation and undoubtedly add value (visually & functionally).

Workshop
For all levels of expertise with no previous experience necessary. Particular attention is given to detail and quality in order that the best possible experience and outcome is achieved.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance the learning and practice of skills associated with photographic presentation that will enable participants to apply hands-on skills as well as acquire knowledge of materials, tools, and techniques relating to the subject of mount cutting, framing, display and exhibition.  Notes provided.

You have created and printed a photographic image and need to add value by producing a more complete item inclusive of a mount, frame, or by creating an alternative means of display. You will have the opportunity to create your own mounts and experiment with single & double mounts, multiple apertures, shadow effects, etc. As with every art & craft there are tips and tricks as well as knowledge and skills that can be observed and practiced by attending a suitable workshop. A workshop is best designed to suit individual needs in order to achieve the best possible results and to gain greater satisfaction.

Each workshop is designed to suit the needs of each person attending. However, a typical workshop will generally include:

DAY ONE

  • Brief introduction to the art of mounting, framing, display and exhibiting.
  • Presentation of a wide range of examples showing types of mounts, frames, techniques, and other methods of displaying photographic images (canvas, Plastexe board, aluminium, Perspex sheeting, Perspex dome, metal frames, etc.
  • Introduction to types of mountboards and their uses.
  • Estimating & measuring for a single mount and encapsulation backing board.
  • Introduction to mount cutting equipment, tools and accessories.
  • Demonstration on cutting single mount, hinging the image and applying an encapsulation backing board.
  • Hands-on experience estimating & measuring and cutting a single mount for a chosen image, hinging and applying an encapsulation board.  Using supplied mount cutting equipment (straight and bevel cutting)
  • Estimating & measuring for a double mount.
  • Demonstration on cutting double mount.
  • Hands-on experience estimating & measuring and cutting a double mount for a chosen image, hinging and applying an encapsulation board.
  • Introduction to frame mouldings and types of glass (examples of mouldings & frames and types of glass).
  • Estimating & measuring the moulding, cutting and assembly.
  • Finishing the moulding (natural wood: waxing, liming, staining & painting)
  • Cutting glass (demonstration only for safety reasons).
DAY TWO
  • Estimating & measuring for a multi-aperture mount.
  • Demonstration on cutting a multi-aperture mount.
  • Hands-on experience estimating & measuring and cutting a multi-aperture mount for at least two chosen images or more.
  • Demonstration on cutting a ‘title aperture’ within a prepared mount.
  • Demonstration on cutting a ‘shadow relief mount’ with coloured accent (creating a more defined 3D effect).
  • Demonstration on preparing and cutting geometric mount apertures.
  • Hands-on experience with individual choice of preparing and constructing any types of mount for own personal images. Continual assistance and guidance will be provided throughout this period.
  • Preparing the frame and glass for assembling the mounted image into the frame.
  • Demonstration on preparing the mounted image for assembly into the glazed frame, cutting and applying an appropriate backing board, fixing, taping, fixing ‘D’ ring and cord – ready for hanging.  *It is anticipated that each participant will have discussed framing arrangements with the tutor prior to starting the workshop so that at least one of the mounted items produced during the workshop can be assembled and finished off within a suitable type of frame, ready to take home and hang.
  • Hands-on experience assembling the mounted image into a frame, cleaning the glass, insertion, backing board & fixing, taping, ‘D’ rings & cording.  Tips on hanging!
  • Advice on buying materials, tools and equipment – notes provided.
  • *Note: Arrangements can be made to prepare and construct a frame that is best suited for your own work (or be advised on what type and dimension of frame to purchase) and this can be used during the workshop for you to learn how to insert your mounted work, assemble, finishing off, etc – ready to hang.
Duration & Costs
Each workshop is ideal for small groups of up to 6 persons over duration of a two day period (day one 10.00 to 17.00 & day two 09.30 to 16.30). The cost of the workshop is £130 and any further costs will be dependent upon needs (discuss with tutor). However, the basic initial cost of materials will be £12 and any further additional materials will be supplied and charged as required.

What you need to bring: photographs of various sizes ideally including at least two or three smaller sizes (approximately 150mm x 100mm) for multi-aperture mounting, with others up to A4 (210mm x 297mm) - sizes outside this measurement to be discussed with tutor, pencil (2H), note pad, white eraser and calculator.  Prior to starting a workshop the tutor will discuss the individual needs of each person attending so that materials will be prepared and provided accordingly.
