Time. 10.00am - 4pm

Two, one-day workshops with leading professional garden photographer Clive Boursnell. The course will comprise three parts 1) introduction 2) hands-on photography in Kew Gardens and 3) evaluation.

To introduce the day, Clive will discuss the principal elements in plant and garden photography, with reference to his own work. Students will discuss and share their own experiences of their own photography.

Clive will then lead the group to Kew Gardens, where they will discuss and understand, in the field, all of the thought processes that go into producing professional garden photographs. This will include consideration of light, shade, weather, framing, lens choice, depth of field, and composition. Group members will then split up and execute their own photographs under Clive’s guidance. You will be asked to take your camera off automatic so please have a basic understanding off using your camera on manual. Clive will be there to help but this does take up valuable time.

Finally, Clive and the group will discuss their experiences of the day and evaluate their own images.

Topics covered:

* using natural light
* learning how time of day and weather affect garden photography
* How to select the best views of a garden
* framing and composition - close up and wide views
* using a variety of lenses for different garden projects
* buildings and gardens - the Kew glasshouses
* using the right equipment for specific projects
* how to evaluate and edit your own images

You will also have a chance to view the International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition which will be running at Kew Gardens.

The workshop is relevant to complete beginners up to experienced semi-professionals.

Note there is a 5 minute walk between the discussion location and Kew Gardens.

Required: Your own camera and tripod if possible. Printed samples of your own photographs if you wish and your camera manual.

Clive has over 35 years experience in photographing plants and gardens and has published work in all the leading garden and lifestyle magazines and newspapers and is former Chair of the professional Garden Photographers' Association. Clive will give you essential practical advice and guidance on how to take better images.
