Following the group's Annual Print Day at Leatherhead in January, the first outing of the year is to Chichester Cathedral. A large eccclesiastical building such as this offers a wealth of photographic opportunities, both for grand views and for details and more intimate scenes.

The organiser, Jim Tonks ARPS, exhibited a selection of his church and cathedral photographs at Fenton House in 2009. Jim and his colleagues have a wealth of experience in this field and in the use of large format cameras. Members are warmly welcomed to come to Chichester and take advantage of their experience and skills, and to enjoy for themselves the challenge of photographing in a cathedral.

Chichester Cathedral is essentially a Norman building with later additions and modifications. After a fire in 1187 the clerestory was rebuilt and the retro-choir constructed in the Transitional style. Many of the chapels were added in the 13th C in the Early English style, and the Lady Chapel enlarged at the end of that century. Later additions include the spire, now a landmark for miles around, and the cloisters, whilst a notable recent feature is the tapestry by John Piper (1966) which adorns the altar screen. There is of course much more to enjoy and photograph than is covered here!

We will assemble at the entrance to the cathedral at 1030, and expect to photograph for around two hours.
