Think Photography 2010 takes place on 13 and 14 November and is open to everyone, members and non-members of The Society. With talks, competitions, a trade show and Distinction assessments, it’s not to be missed.

Bring your camera with you. Paterson Photographic and Creative Backgrounds are building a complete photographic studio for you. A photographic model will be in the studio at times during each day for you to explore studio lighting techniques.

One of the key events of the photographic calendar, Think Photography takes place at THE PUBLIC, an arts venue in the West Midlands, on 13 and 14 November. Being a modern building with innovative architecture and interactive art works, it well represents the aspirations of The Society as a modern, forward thinking organisation.

THE PUBLIC
Access to THE PUBLIC venue is easy. It is ten minutes from junction one of the M5 and around twenty minutes’ drive from Birmingham city centre. “The Public” is within sight of several pay & display car parks, with a large car park being directly across the road from the venue. “THE PUBLIC” is easily accessible via public transport – just a couple of minutes walk from both West Bromwich Bus Station and West Bromwich Central Metro stop. Bus services run from all the West Midlands centres to West Bromwich and the Metro runs from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton. Sandwell and Dudley Network Rail station is only a few stops away on the 404-bus route, and is on the west coast main line.

TRADE SHOWS
Most of the leading brands in Photography will be there to show their latest equipment and to give advice on how to get the very best images from it. Many exhibitors will have special deals on their equipment at the event.

CONFIRMED TALKS

Ben Hall (3.15pm Sunday - cost £2.00)
"Visions in Nature" Ben Hall has gained worldwide recognition as one of Britain’s foremost professional wildlife photographers. By focusing almost exclusively on the British Isles, Ben has developed an intimate understanding of our natural heritage and how best to represent it visually. His images are often surprising, always striking and ever striving to awaken people to the diversity of Britain’s magnificent natural world. He is described by “Living Edge” magazine as ‘a passionate and experienced wildlife photographer, with a perfectionist’s eye for detail’.

With an intense, almost evangelical, passion for the natural world, nurtured since early childhood, Ben has used his skill in photography to capture many stunning images. He is driven by the need to protect and preserve Britain’s last fragile ecosystems, as testified by his work with the RSPB and various Wildlife Trusts and other conservation organisations.

Ben’s personal approach to wildlife photography lies in the creative art of ’seeing’. His aim is to use his pictures to communicate his personal vision, to generate an emotional response and to excite the viewer’s aesthetic sensitivity. He often pre-visualises a particular image in his mind before setting out to photograph it. To realise this vision by turning it into a photographic image can take weeks or even months, and often sees him returning frequently to the same location to capture the perfect shot.

All of Ben’s photographs are true representations of what he saw. His images are not digitally manipulated, which is an important part of his philosophy. Ben’s spectacular images have earned him numerous prestigious international awards and his one man exhibition in Manchester, extended by popular demand had thousands of visitors over the course of a year. Phil Brooks (2.00pm Sunday - cost £2.00)
"Beyond 60 degrees North, a sub-arctic photographic journey" Fascinated by the idea of the North and the appeal of cold, often inhospitable environments, Phil has explored countries, landscapes and communities 60º north of the equator, beginning on the Siberian border with Norway, through Scandinavia, to the Scottish Islands including Orkney, and Shetland’s remote island of Foula. He then continued on to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Northern Canada and Southern Alaska.

David Keith Jones FRPS (4.15pm Saturday - cost £2.00)
"Nomads of Kenya". "David Keith Jones FRPS is a much published photographer and a popular speaker. Apart from his own books, Faces of Kenya and Shepherds of the Desert published in London by Hamish Hamilton, many thousands of his images have been used worldwide in books, magazines, calendars and newspapers. As an expert on Africa his masterly presentations, illustrated with beautiful images, have delighted hundreds of audiences in England, the United States and Africa. His presentation on the lifestyle of the semi desert nomadic people of East Africa offers an insight into remote areas few people have visited." Clive R Haynes FRPS (2.00pm Saturday)
A two-part lecture:
Part 1: ‘Digital Infrared Image Capture and Workflow’: Clive will outline the options for digital IR photography, show examples, how to work an image and the advantages of ‘Channel-Swapping’.
Part 2: ‘3D (stereo) Photography Using Any Camera – The Red-Cyan Anaglyph Method’. Clive will explain this simple method of making amazing 3D images. You’ll be surprised how easy it is.

Pippa Walkley - SkillSET (12.15pm Sunday)
“Working in Photo Imaging – Getting In and Getting On” - the reality of being freelance, where the jobs are, other roles in the industry apart from being a photographer, signposting to resources to help people and advice on training and progression routes. Skillset is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Creative Media which comprises TV, film, radio, interactive media, animation, computer games, facilities, photo imaging, publishing, advertising and fashion and textiles.

Pippa Walkley is Skillset's Photo Imaging Sector Manager. Before joining Skillset, she worked as a freelance photographer, a lecturer at St Martin's School of Art and more recently as Production Manager for a Bristol based independent pro-lab. Pippa says she was hooked on photography from the age of seven, after seeing her first print develop in a home darkroom, and following a formal photographic education has spent her whole working life in the photographic industry. In her current role, she researches the skills, training and education issues of the photo imaging industry and its workforce and leads on strategic development and action plans to support and benefit them. Pippa also sits in an invited capacity on a number of advisory panels, including the RPS Education Committee.

Howard Butterfield - The Image File(11.15 Sunday)
Theimagefile has now evolved into the most comprehensive and easy-to-use system in Europe for the photographer to get their images selling online and their websites generating new bookings and making life simpler. Our customers often describe them as a “business in a box” or “a complete web strategy for photographers”.

Theimagefile is currently hosting over 15 million print resolution images on behalf of 2000 customers (and they make 7 thumbnails for each of those!)

Steve Price - Permajet (3.15 Saturday)
Inkjet Papers & Canvases for Everyone! - An informative overview of PermaJet’s impressive Paper and Canvas range of 32 products (currently the largest in the World!).
Understand the way in which the PermaJet range is sectioned into Textured, Smooth, Traditional and Digital and learn how to use the properties of individual papers to bring out the very best results of your printed images.

Also touching upon facts as to why colour management is important and how to reap the cost saving and quality benefits of the unique PermaJet Eco-Flo Bulk Ink System (CIS).

Rob Griffith - Native Digital (10.15am Sunday)
"Three steps to Colour Heaven." Colour management is often portrayed as being a complex subject but Native Digital's Rob Griffith breaks a colour workflow down into three easy steps within the budget and capabilities of any photographer. He will cover monitor calibration, colour managing RAW conversions and printer profiling so that by the end of the session the audience will be able to take control of their colour.

Rob Griffith is the author of Practical Colour Management and a series of articles on colour management for the RPS Journal, he also delivers regular seminars on colour management for the Society. He has specialised in colour management for the last ten years and has worked with national magazines and museums, professional and amateur photographers, artists and designers - anybody who needs to achieve more accurate colour."

Keith Brown FRPS (5.15pm Saturday)
"The Quiet One" Keith will show one of his audio visual sequences and follw this with a talk on how the sequence was made

EXHIBITIONS

Martin Parr HonFRPS. Black Country Stories Magnum member and RPS Centenary Medallist Martin Parr HonFRPS spent a year with students from Sandwell College capturing Black Country customs and festivals, from Vaisakhi and St Georges Day, to Teddy Gray’s Sweets and Simmons’ Pork Scratchings. Over 1,000 contact prints will be on display showing the work accomplished by the students of Sandwell College as well as the final selection for the print exhibition

Digital Imaging Group Midlands Region Print Exhibition will be selected on the Saturday morning and will be displayed at THE PUBLIC during the event.

Projected Digital Image Exhibitions. Large plasma screens will be showing a range of Digital Projected Image exhibitions from the 2010 International Projected Image exhibition, The Nature Group, Travel Group, Contemporary Group

BLU-TACK PHOTO COMPETITION

In addition to all of the above there is a blu-tack competition (we take your print and stick it to the wall with blu-tack) in the Longroom at THE PUBLIC and the rules are quite simple:

There are 3 sections: Under 16, 16-25 and over 25.
The competition free but only open to visitors to the Think Photography 2010 event Only one print per entrant and it can be any subject you choose.
Prints must be no bigger than A4 and un-mounted.
The Society reserves the right to remove any image it thinks may cause offence. Whilst every care will be taken with prints the organisers cannot accept liability for any damage or loss sustained
The name, address and telephone number must be on the back of the print
Anyone wanting their entry returned must be present at 4.30 on Sunday afternoon to collect.
The winners will be announced at 4.00pm on the Sunday afternoon
So far we have £675 worth of prizes to give away to the winners. The winning entries will be announced on Sunday at 16.00hours. The winner in each of the three sections will receive £100 in photographic goods/vouchers, second £75 and third £50.
The Society reserves the right to reproduce entries in Society publications with the permission of the author

DISTINCTION ASSESSMENTS

Each day the Licentiateship assessment panel will be sitting and visitors to the event are welcome to sit in and watch the panel at work. To apply for and assessment please, contact the Distinctions Department. The assessment fee will include free entry to Think Photography. Any applicant who is recommended for the Licentiateship, will have application retified by Council on the day and receive their certificate from the President at approx 3.15pm each day.

At 1.00pm each day there will be a showing of Fellowship Panels in the Distinctions assessment room.

WHILST VISITING THINK PHOTOGRAPHY 2010 SEE WHAT ELSE "THE PUBLIC" HAS TO OFFER

As well as the modern design of the building “THE PUBLIC” has several innovative and interactive art works. No doubt these will be an added attraction for visitors to the event. So while you’re there why not try out some of the PUBLIC’s interactive art works for yourself

Digital Artworks. Interactive artworks are located on the ramp between ground and third floor. Several Society members already have work on display here.

Animo. Allows visitors to create a 7-frame-wide image using props and any other objects that they wish to use.

Content Pools. Is a set of circular screens that display images of water related to the Datafall. Visitors using control frames can change the effects.

Datafall. Datafall is a digital waterfall, which changes appearance and sound as visitors touch the three relevant screens. The flow will change colour, speed or structure depending on which screen is touched.

Flypad. Flypad Is a videogame for up to 11 players. The objective is for players to exchange virtual body parts by colliding with one another.

Telepresent Embrace Is a set of linked cameras that allow visitors to occupy the same screen as one another despite being in a different physical location in the gallery.

Restaurant and Snack Facilities
Couture café bar & restaurant is situated on the ground floor of “THE PUBLIC” and is open to the general public and visitors to the building. It offers a broad selection of hot and cold drinks, breakfasts, sandwiches and other snacks and a range of freshly cooked hot meals. There is also a smaller café facility in the Longroom on the third floor offering refreshments, which will open during THINK PHOTOGRAPHY 2010.
