The chapel of St. Mary and St. Nicolas at Lancing College, begun in 1868 and completed in 1901, is reputedly the largest school chapel in the world. It is an impressive example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, over 90 feet high inside to the ceiling. It contains the largest rose window in England, and much carving, stained glass and tapestries. The style is English Gothic with French influences.

We will meet at the entrance to Lancing College Chapel at 1030, and following this visit there will be a lunch break in Shoreham (arrangements are being made for lunch for those that want it).

In the afternoon visits have been arranged to two other local churches, both containing significant Norman features. We first call at St. Nicolas, Old Shoreham, where a notable features is the Norman tower, with carved capitals and corbels on the crossing arch within. We then visit St. Mary de Haura at New Shoreham, where the transepts, crossing and choir survive from a larger church begun ca. 1130. The style is an interesting blend of Norman, Transitional and early Gothic, and the choir is the main feature of interest
