The first visit of the Archaeology & Heritage Group's 2012 programme of visits is to a modern but interesting addition to our religious heritage.

The Gravesend Gurdwara (full title Shri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara) was opened towards the end of 2010, and is reputed to be one of the largest Sikh temples (gurdwara) outside India. Sikhs locally form around 7% of the population, and this magnificent building is constructed to take a large number of worshippers as well as to include educational and other facilities. The structure incorporates five elaborate domes, and the building uses granite, marble and Kota stone from India.
