Stowe, owned by the National Trust, is a spectacular collection of temples and monuments set in extensive grounds.

Meet at the main car park 1030. We will spend the day photographing here, but will also have the benefit of a talk on the history of Stowe by National Trust archaeologist Gary Marshall. This will take place at 12.30 p.m.  Refreshments are available.

Stowe House is not owned by NT, and not part of our visit. It may be open during the afternoon for those that are interested.

The approach down a wide avenue 1.5 miles long, terminating in a 60ft Corinthian arch, gives a foretaste of the scale of the landscape gardens at Stowe. Over 400 acres in extent, there are over 40 temples, monuments, bridges and pavilions, set in an 'improved' landscape setting with vistas and lakes. Most, but not all, are in Classical vein, and form a unique and extensive collections of monuments in their own right.

Many of the leading architects and landscape gardeners of the day worked on the landscaping and buildings during the 18th C, and Stowe has been a tourist attraction since the mid 18th C, visited by aristocrats and royalty. Stowe House became a school in 1927, and the National Trust acquired the grounds in 1989.  Extensive long-term restoration by the Trust has produced the spectacular results now on view, so the original concept as well as the many individual buildings and monuments can be appreciated.
