The National Media Museum opened in 1983 and houses the UK’s national collection of photography. In 2003 The Society’s Collection was passed to the museum making Bradford the location of the world’s most important collection of historic photographs and cameras. The Society has enjoyed an active partnership with the museum since this time and works with it on joint initiatives. The Society’s collection continues to grow supported by the Society’s supporters and the museum’s curatorial expertise.
To further enhance these links The Society has arranged a special day for members at the museum. It will be an opportunity to look at the museum's acclaimed exhibition: In the Blink of an Eye which is part of the Cultural Olympiad programme in Yorkshire, to see the new Life online gallery and, of course, the permanent galleries in the museum.
The Society has arranged especially for members behind-the-scenes visits and curator-led tours of In the Blink of an Eye. There will be curator talks in Insight, the museum’s research facility, and there will be an opportunity to see recent acquisitions to The Society's Collection in the Krasna-Kraus room, though out the day. Just five minutes walk from the museum is the city of Bradford's new £24 million waterpark in Centenary Square.
The museum cafe and cinema will be providing discounts to members on production of a current membership card. There will also be a secure room available for leaving personal belongings and to meet fellow members during the day. Jury’s Inn hotel is offering a preferential room rate of £58 (single)/£64 (double) including breakfast. Call 01274 848500 quoting ‘The Royal Photographic Society/National Media Museum’.
The President, and other members of The Society's Council will be present along with the Director-General and some staff.
Bradford is readily accessible by train and the M1 and M62 and motorways. It is close to Leeds and Manchester, and Saltaire, Haworth and the Yorkshire Dales are close by for those wanting to extend their stay.
Tours will take place at:
Insight/Behind-the-scenes: 1100, 1200, 1400, 1500
In the Blink of an Eye: 1100, 1200, 1400, 1500
Viewing of recent acquisitions from the Collection in the Krazna-Kraus Room at the end of the Insight tours.
The day is open to all members but the tours will need to be pre-booked on the day as places are limited to 15 people on each.
