PLEASE NOTE: This is a series of three Tuesday afternoon workshops and you will need to be able to attend on all three dates.

There is an alternative series of three running on Saturday mornings, the 9th, 16th and 23th February.

Digital photography allows us to record what seems an unlimited amount of pictures. It has become such habit that it is not uncommon to hear people say that they shot hundreds or even thousands of images at an event or on holiday.

The challenge for many is not in the taking of the pictures but in the development of a story, and more importantly choosing photos by recognising what makes a good image. With a plethora of story telling outlets available for the photographer to show their work, this skill to self edit has never been more in demand.

This workshop introduces participants to the qualities of a good picture then moves into discussing the development of the picture story. It will look at the manner in which we communicate through photographs and combine photographs to say something. We will examine visual arrangements such as the diptych, triptych, and collage presentations and what they offer, understand the flexibility of typology as it is used to explore and present ideas and finally dip into the art of the editing and arranging photographs from wall exhibition to multimedia iphoneographic and online options to communicate with clarity and impact.

Programme:

Participants preparation:  Develop a themed project with and produce 15-20 4x6 inch images. For example, DVJ has a Sunday shoot at Remembrance Day and the project could be Remembrance Day, with the theme being an aspect of that: portraits, a look at the whole day, concentrating on a particular colour. But it can be any project that you are working on, or want to work on. Each participant must bring their 15-20 4x6 prints (don’t have to be competition standard), together with a half page (max) project concept description (ie project, theme, why and how).

Week 1: Individually and as a group we will review images, edit projects down to a single image that defines each project. The exercise highlights decision-making, confidence in portrayal of an idea through imagery.

Participants will be given an exercise to prepare for Week 2.

Week 2:  An examination of exhibition styles which include presentation methods from exhibition to the photo book as a means of edit/story telling, order and rhythm. Exploration of diptych, triptych and multiple layouts will set the tone for examination with reference to wedding to travel books and posters.

Participants will be given an exercise to prepare for Week 3

Week 3: Using the knowledge from weeks 1 & 2 we look into some popular social networking and software technology, that allows a platform to create and broadcast stories in web to book form. From Instagram to Blurb, blogs to books – we will immerse ourselves in the opportunities that exist for the photographer to exhibit once the edit is complete.

What to bring:  project images & concept statement, notebook & pen.   A camera if you wish, but there will be no camera based exercises during the workshop except for the homework.

Level: As this is a creative, not a technical, workshop it is suitable for all levels of photographers.
