Tim Smith is a freelance photographer based in Yorkshire who combines editorial and commercial work with exhibition, publishing and mixed media projects. The north of England and its diverse communities have provided the inspiration for much of his work, as well as acting as a springboard for many national and international projects.

He worked primarily as a photojournalist for over a decade. Throughout the 1990s he covered northern England for The Observer as well as doing regular commissions for newspapers such as The Guardian and the Independent. Over the last twelve years he has diversified his client base, working for organisations and publications that cover education, regeneration, health and social care, housing, diversity, and the arts, culture & heritage.

His long term projects have resulted in dozens of exhibitions toured nationally and internationally. His main interests as a photographer and writer have been showcased in eleven books. Many explore the links between Britain and people in other parts of the world, such as Ukraine’s Forbidden History and Coal, Frankincense and Myrrh - Yemen and British Yemenis. His latest publication is The Grand Trunk Road – From Delhi to the Khyber Pass, which was The Observer’s Photography Book of the Month for March 2011.

He was recently commissioned to produce a series of short films for The Space. This new digital arts platform is a joint initiative between the BBC and the Arts Council and his films can be viewed until the end of March 2013 at http://thespace.org/items/s00006fg

He is a member of Panos Pictures, a London-based photo agency specialising in global social issues which is respected for its integrity and willingness to pursue stories beyond the contemporary media agenda.  It represents photojournalists worldwide who “bring an unparalleled understanding and awareness of the sensitivities and ethical dimensions of the issues and areas they document”.
