Bill Brandt - one of the many portraits by Michael Birt on displayed at Fulham Palace.
The meeting, held at Fulham Palace was attended by 40 members and guests. There was an opportunity to look at the exhibition and refreshment before the formal part of the evening. Michael described how he started his photography writing to people asking for an opportunity to take their photographs. He had retained the letters, acceptances an refusals. He gave a fascintaing account of this early encounter with Bill Brandt. He described how the exhibition demonstrated his development in photography, described how the venue was chosen, the method used to select the subjects portrayed and the role Zelda Cheatle played in curating. We learnt much about his use of light, a move to plain backgrounds, location, a preference for monochrome and his relationship with "sitters". We had a lively "Qusetion and Answer" session calling the evening to a halt a few minute before 9pm.
