Holography in the Modern Museum
A One-Day Holography Conference
19th September 2008
HOSTED BY
THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY HOLOGRAPHY GROUP
AT
DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY
THEME:
TO PROMOTE THE USE AND UNDERSTANDING OF HOLOGRAPHY IN MUSEUMS
- Display Holography is a tool that has been used by various museums around the world since the medium was first developed in the 1960s recent developments in full colour techniques make it far more viable and attractive.
. - Holography has proved a popular subject for museum exhibits in the past but has recently been neglected by curators, who tend to have little experience of the medium
- Holography, as a useful tool in conservation work, is not widely understood.
The goal of the conference is to address some of these issues by inviting speakers with experience of working in the various areas and by inviting museum professionals to attend.

HOLOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Short Courses In Applied Holography
A Hands-on Workshop in basic Holographic techniques and their application in Museums
These two (one day) courses, consisting of approximately seven hours of hands on laboratory demonstrations, aim to provide the required basis of knowledge for the application of recording holograms. Giving museum personnel the opportunity to examine and handle holograms and to ask questions about their use in conservation and public display. The course provides a basic introduction to the theoretical foundations of applied optics, and then develops this theme to illustrate the many diverse applications of optical technology. A comprehensive set of lecture notes is provided.
The course has been designed to explain the basic underlying physical principles of holography, optical phenomena and optical equipment for the recording of holograms. Introduce and demonstrate a range of optical instruments and techniques including image forming systems, thin film devices, interferometry and holography. Provide an introduction to the techniques involved in designing optical systems. The full course fee is £500.
