The Visual Arts Group Extravaganza is an exciting day of lectures by leading photographers together with an exhibition and the selection of the members' Digital Projected Image Annual Exhibition.

 Lectures will be presented by:

 John Swannell

John Swannell is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. During his time working for magazines such as Vogue, Harpers & Queen, the Sunday Times and Tatler  he developed his very distinctive, individual style...

In 1989 John Swannell held a one-man show at The Royal Academy in Edinburgh, followed in 1990 by an exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in the same city. In July 1990 The Royal Photographic Society held a retrospective of his fashion work.

From November 1996 to March 1997 John had a one-man show of his portraits at The National Portrait Gallery in London to celebrate the publication of his book 'Twenty Years On' which are now held in their archives.

The National Portrait Gallery in London has over fifty of John's photographs, and The V&A, The National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Royal Photographic Society now have many of John's works in their permanent collections.

 Paul Mellor

Paul Mellor's  talk  “A View of the Past and Present-An Eye to the Future”  features images taken in Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh from 2001 to the present day. Paul and his wife are involved with a child care charity and he has made some 14 trips to the region to record the charity’s work and the people of Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh.

Armenia celebrated 13 years of independence from the Soviet Union - but the years haven’t been kind to the country that was first in the world to adopt Christianity. Its recent history has been bloody. Genocide by Turks in 1915, annexed by the Soviet Union in 1922; a major earthquake in the 1980’s was followed by war with Azerbaijan over the enclave Nagorno Karabagh, which displaced over a million people. Then, independence from Russia removed some of the last strands of support for a health service lacking in drugs, training and often rudimentary equipment.

Paul Mellor’s beautifully crafted images show life in an honest yet compassionate way. The pride and integrity of the people is an integral part of these sensitive yet artistically bold images that both inform and stimulate the viewer.
