Open during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, entrants were invited to capture the excitement and the drama of how people across the globe were getting into the spirit of the world’s greatest sporting event.
From community and cultural events and celebrations of the Games, through to national and international organised events, including the action at the Games themselves, 2,325 images in total were entered into Spirit of the Games and 23 images were selected including Gold, Silver and Bronze award winners.
The selection panel included Marc Aspland FRPS, Chief Sports Photographer for The Times, Tom Hunter HonFRPS, Photographic Artist and Bob Martin HonFRPS, multi-award winning sports photographer who was working for London 2012 consulting on photographic Issues for the Olympics.
During the competition launch Sharron Davies MBE, Olympic and Commonwealth Medallist commented: “2012 will be an amazing year for sport in the UK. The RPS’s competition will allow people to capture and show off their own community and sporting activities wherever they happen to be. I am looking forward to seeing the entries and the winners of this exciting competition.”
