Agriculture in Oregon

Satellite-based remote sensing is a useful tool in monitoring and planning agricultural production. This image shows centre-pivot irrigation in the high desert east of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, northwest USA. Brighter areas have rougher surface textures - such as vegetation - while smoother surfaces show in darker tones. The line of bright red objects shows the route of overhead power cables and pylons. Despite having little rainfall, this area is often covered with cloud so conventional mapping is of little use. Microwave radar penetrates cloud with little effort. By comparing predicted conditions from the image with actual surveys (known as ‘ground truth’), the characteristics of radar systems can be verified so when they are used in other applications, such as space research, the data may be interpreted with higher confidence.
