The Royal Photographic Society stages a number of exhibitions and competitions throughout the year and organises three major touring photographic exhibitions: The International Print Exhibition, International Images for Science Exhibition and The RPS Members' Exhibition. There is also an exhibition of member's work shown each month at Fenton House, the headquarters of The Society in Bath, UK, and The Society stages other competitions and exhibitions during the year, including the International Projected Image Exhibition and the Celebrate a Summer of Sport Exhibition
The International Print Exhibition
The Royal Photographic Society’s International Print Exhibition is the longest standing exhibition of its kind in the world, celebrating it's 150th Anniversary in 2007. During its long history it has gained a reputation for showcasing a wide range of genres and styles of photography, with cutting edge prints being shown alongside traditional work. The high profile of the exhibition's history, name and format ensures wide coverage by the photographic press and an enthusiastic response by gallery visitors. Each year the Exhibition of 100 - 125 selected images tours the UK and overseas. In recent years it has been shown in China and Ukraine. Society medals are awarded and the whole Exhibition is reproduced in a full colour catalogue. Each entrant receives a complimentary copy of the catalogue. This open exhibition welcomes entries from members and non members of The Society.
Since 2008, the exhibition has been supported by international legal firm, Allen & Overy LLP.
The International Images for Science Exhibition
The International Images for Science Exhibition was instigated in 2011. It showcases up to 100 of the world's best scientific images.
The Society was founded to promote the art and science of photography. The art aspect of photography is well propagated and covered by a number of exhibitions but it is not often that we see an exhibition of scientific photography. The International Images for Science Exhibition redresses the balance and fulfils The Society's remit. It showcases the many different areas where scientists rely on photography to record, measure and use the resulting images to illustrate their research papers and publications. Some of the most renowned scientists around the world contribute to this exhibition. Many of the images represent worlds beyond human vision, using the microscope and the telescope, subjects revealed through polarised light, fluorescence and techniques such as high-speed photography. The subjects range from micro-organisms and minerals to natural phenomena and the everyday object seen in a new way. The images may show the unfamiliar but they are unquestionably fascinating and beautiful, combining both the art and science of photography.
The Members' Biennial
The Society's Members' Exhibition is an exclusive exhibition for RPS members worldwide and takes place every two years. It is a chance for members to showcase the high standard of their work and to demonstrate their commitment to the art and science of photography.
The Exhibition of 100 framed prints tours the UK and overseas.
- Entry for the Members' Biennial 2013 was through a competition website and 100 images were selected for the exhibition:
The International Projected Image Exhibition
The International Slide Exhibition was renamed the International Projected Image Exhibition in 2007 with the addition of a Digital Section. It has been well established within the photographic fraternity for many years and continues to attract a very high entry worldwide. In 2011 the exhibition became entirely digital, welcoming work in the Open and Nature sections. In addition to Society medals it has, for some years, been awarded recognition by the Photographic Society of America and acceptances can be credited towards PSA Star Ratings.
Celebrate a Summer of Sport
The Royal Photographic Society celebrated the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with an online photographic competition, which ran from April - September 2012. Exhibitions of Award winning and selected finalists' images were shown at Bath and London as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
