Chris Charnock ARPS - Jan/Feb 2009
People & Places
Chris first started entering competitions at the age of 10 whilst using his parents’ film camera, after growing up watching them doing photography as a career and a hobby (both FRPS). Although he was never pushed to follow in their footsteps, it seemed that photography was in his blood from an early stage and he especially loved the ‘buzz’ that he got from capturing sporting images at the peak of the action.
Through work experience at high school Chris found a place at the local paper and photographed for free on weekends at Wigan Athletic and Rugby games for the love of taking sports images, through attending various sporting events he eventually had a panel of work to submit for an A.R.P.S, which he achieved at the age of 16.
Chris’s other achievements include, 150th RPS Print International Gold Medal winner, International Young Travel Photographer of the Year and Lancashire & Cheshire Print Photographer of Year 2007. Chris has also been awarded University scholarship for excellence in Photography and some of his recent work featured in the Royal Photographic Society Book – Portfolio One.
Chris has been a Member of Wigan 10 Photo Group, (Inaugural World Club Champions, European and British Champions) since the week he was born literally, as the club was formed in the same year – 1988, and the meetings have always been held at his house, this allowed him to see a variety of styles from a young age and that started to become a real inspiration. The work Chris has produced has been used since he was 16 as part of the clubs entry into various competitions and they have been the most successful club in Britain in recent years.
“Diversity is what I have tried to show in my sets of work.”
