CONTEMPORARY GROUP EAST MIDLANDS REGION

NEWSLETTER, FEBRUARY 2011

Hello to All,

It seems a long time since we last met and a lot of snow and ice has passed since then, as well as a lot of water under Trent Bridge!

MEETING 19 JUNE

As I mentioned in December, we have Phil Brooks coming to show us images from his project Sixty Degrees North not an event to miss. Please ensure it is in your diary.

FORMAT FESTIVAL, DERBY

This is the 11th holding of this event and, this year it takes place from 4 March to 3 April with an extensive number of photographic exhibitions and events in and around Derby, including a Magnum show in Derby Market Square.

A day or more will be rewardingly spent visiting Derby and to see a full list of what’s on have a look at the web site http://media.ideageneration.co.uk/resources/0000/0135/Press_Release_-_FORMAT_-_Full_Programme_Announcement.pdf which is the press release and also the main site which is at  www.formatfestival.com/

RPS EAST MIDLANDS

We made a commitment to participate in the event on Sunday, 17 April 2011 at the Aura Technology Centre, Manners Road, Newark.

The day consists of a VERY short AGM followed by three or four of our members showing work and, after lunch, Ed Clarke is the speaker.

Ed is an RPS HQ sponsored speaker who has a reputation for combining strong ideas with an ability to work in sensitive situations.  He has many photographic awards to his name including BJP International Photography award, a Terry O’Neil/IPG Award for Contemporary British Photography and a Golden Pencil at the One Show Awards, New York as well as being short listed for the International Photographer of the Year 2010.  His web site is www.edmundclark.com.

To date I have only one offer to talk from our Group, Simon Marchini, so I would appreciate further offers please.  We agreed by communal vote to support the Region on this day so please let me have your offers.

Apart from attending to support our Group members, the talk by Ed Clarke will be well worth a visit in its own right.

Details of the venue are on the RPS East Midlands web site, accessed from the main RPS site and the day costs £10 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.  It is best to take a packed lunch.

RPS CONTEMPORARY GROUP WEEKEND – THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Some of us attended this event last year. 2011 sees a return to Birmingham City University but at a different time of year, 1 – 2 October.

This really is an excellent weekend where we can immerse ourselves in photography, have  good conversations with fellow attendees and listen to some of the most prominent photographers in the UK.

Spending the weekend is best but day visits can be made.

The cost for the weekend is £75 for both days for Contemporary Group members (£90 for others) and day costs are £45 (£55) for the Saturday and £40 (£45) for Sunday.

Hotel costs are in addition and one has to book one’s own accommodation.  However, should several of us be attending we could, perhaps, book into the same hotel and have the chance for further natters over a drink in the bar and, perhaps, breakfast!

   Speakers on Saturday are:

Zed Nelson, Susannah Brown, Sirkka-Llisa Knottinen and Tim Smith.

Sunday – Brijesh Patel, Mitra Tabrizian, Dana Popa and John Davies.
