The Visual Art Group was founded in January 1921 "to foster the interest and advancement in all matters relating to Pictorial Photography". Now, as then, its activities encourage (via workshops, meetings and exhibitions) both traditional and contemporary interpretation of a wide variety of subject matter, from still-life, landscape and architecture, to portraiture and macro-photography and other topics.

All members receive Visual Art, the high quality magazine of the Group. This primarily focuses on the work of members of the Group and regularly features successful distinctions.

The group operates several portfolios where images are exchanged with fellow members for comment. Cick on the Postal and Email Portfolios link on the left hand side of this page for more information.

It also holds an annual print exhibition and a projected image exhibition. These are shown at various locations around the UK.

In addition, meetings are organised and continue to be developed in conjuction with the Society's Regions.

The Visual Art Group administers the Tyng Collection, a collection of outstanding pictorial photography started in 1927 by an American philanthropist and a Society member, Stephen H. Tyng.  He established a foundation to promote and recognise photographic work of outstanding pictorial merit.  The Foundation is very active and continues to acquire such work.  Such acquisitions form part of The Society’s Permanent Collection, which is now held for the Nation in the curatorship of the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
