History

The current Imaging Science Journal has evolved from earlier Journals dealing with the scientific and technological aspects of imaging.  Originally these aspects were published as part of The Society’s Journal which was first published in 1853.

In 1945 the journal was published in two parts: A: general and pictorial and B: scientific and technical. Part B being published in every other issue. In the Society’s centenary year it was decided to divide  the journal in to two separate parts.

The first issue of Part B as a separate Journal was published in January/February 1953 as The Journal of Photographic Science, Section B of The Photographic Journal, under the editorship of Mr R.B. Collins.  Mr R.J. Cox, Hon. FRPS, succeeded R.B.Collins as editor of the J.Photogr.Sci. on 1st January 1960. Dr M. Austin Hon FRPS became the editor in January 1987. At some time during this period the sub-heading was removed  from the title and it became The Journal of Photographic Science.

In 1997 the title changed to The Imaging Science Journal to reflect the changes in photography at that time and to encourage submission of papers from wider areas where the future lay. Mr Austin ceased to be editor with Vol 46, issue 1, 1998 and Professor R Jacobson ASIS Hon FRPS became the Chief Editor with issue 2, 1998.  Also with this issue The Imaging Science Journal was published on behalf of The Society by Professional Engineering Publishing (PEP) to bring in additional and more cost-effective  professional publishing and printing expertise.  Dr A.E.Saunders ASIS Hon FRPS was the assistant editor from 1993 to 1999 and in 1999 Dr M. Christianson ASIS FRPS became executive editor. He was succeeded  by Dr R. Jenkin ASIS FRPS in 2003. With Volume 51 issue 4, 2003 the current publisher, W.S.Maney and Son Ltd took over from PEP
