Mr Sean Bulson

The Royal Photographic Society has helped inspire my social documentary projects. Writing in the RPS journal (January, 2012), I argued for a form of photography that goes beyond the aesthetic - especially the beautiful, but often banal nature of much contemporary digital imaging - as there is, of course, far more to photography than the purely visual.

“To focus only on the aesthetic can lead to unreflective perspective, a form of escapism via an idealised image. While there’s a place for this, there’s also a place for a more critical approach, connecting to philosophical ideas that insight and understanding, taking you beyond aesthetics, and into the realm of meaning”.
