The national Jerwood/Photoworks Awards seek outstanding proposals from UK-based artists and photographers in relation to new approaches to photography.
Three Awards of £5,000 each will be made to support the making of new work, alongside a mentoring programme, access to a significant production fund, and a group exhibition in London as part of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme at Jerwood Space (from November 2015) with a subsequent UK exhibition tour.
The call for entries closes 1 December 2014. Work from all shortlisted artists will be published on the Photoworks website in December.
The selection panel includes:
• Celia Davies, Director, Photoworks
• Shonagh Manson, Director, Jerwood Charitable Foundation
• Broomberg & Chanarin, artists
• Lucy Moore, Director, Claire de Rouen Books
The three selected artists will be announced in January 2015. A high profile pool of mentors from artistic, curatorial, literary and other perspectives will support the selected artists for twelve months after selection, drawing on established talents from varied fields of practice. Both the Photoworks and Jerwood Visual Arts teams will work with and support the artists throughout 2015.
The Awards are open to all art practitioners using photography and applicants must be resident in the UK. There is no age limitation and no requirement for art school or university education. Applicants will be expected to be within ten years of establishing their practice or graduating. The selection panel will consider the track record of applicants’ experience to date and the potential of the ideas submitted. They will also be interested in how this particular opportunity and context could catalyse potential positive developments for selected artists’ practice and profile.
We’re as interested in entrants who use photographs, archives and found photography as we are in photographers and artists who make their own photography.
The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards will give national and international recognition to emerging talent. They are not about promoting existing work, but rather about enabling artists and photographers to make important new work that wouldn’t otherwise happen.
Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Photoworks have a strong shared commitment to supporting artists. These awards will support the process of creating and exhibiting substantial new work, alongside a valuable ongoing programme of professional mentorship from a dream list of practitioners; they will be something very special.
