The Photographers’ Gallery is delighted to announce the launch of the Bar Tur Photobook Award, an exciting new partnership between The Photographers’ Gallery and entrepreneurs and philanthropists Amnon and Armon Bar-Tur. This annual award offers an emerging photographer the chance to publish their first book with The Photographers’ Gallery and Trolley Books in 2015.
The recent proliferation of book fairs, dedicated exhibitions and the self-publishing phenomenon reflect the increasing interest and growing appreciation of photobooks. The Award highlights the Gallery’s recognition of artist books as a primary creative force in contemporary photographic practices as well as its ongoing commitment to nurturing new talents.
The Bar Tur Photobook Award is a three year initiative during which The Photographers’ Gallery will be collaborating with a different UK-based independent publisher each year.
Submissions are open to all artists who have not yet published a book, with the exception of self-published titles. Applicants must either be currently studying for, or have graduated from, a UK-based BA or MA visual arts course within the last five years.
The Bar Tur Photobook Award 2014 is now inviting submissions via a dedicated website www.barturphotobookaward.org.uk. Submissions should comprise an initial concept for the publication including visual material and a written proposal. Deadline for applications is 30 October 2014.
Entries will be judged by a panel of experts co-chaired by Brett Rogers, Director, The Photographers’ Gallery and Amnon Bar-Tur. The inaugural panel will include: David Chandler, writer and curator; Nadav Kander, photographer; Caroline Metcalfe, Photographic Director, Condé Nast Traveller Magazine; Professor Chris Wainwright, Head of Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges and Hannah Watson, Director, Trolley Books.
The winner will be announced at a special ceremony at The Photographers’ Gallery on 8 December 2014. They will be awarded a publishing deal to the value of £20,000 and the opportunity to work with The Photographers’ Gallery and Trolley Books over the course of a year to produce their first book. In addition to the winner’s award four runners-up will also receive £1,000 each towards the realisation of their proposed photobook project.
Brett Rogers, OBE, Director, The Photographers’ Gallery said: 'We are thrilled to launch the Bar Tur Photobook Award which offers an exceptional opportunity for an emerging artist to work with photography experts to produce their first photobook. This Award builds upon the Gallery’s ongoing commitment across all its programmes to champion the photobook and acknowledges its significant contribution to the medium, which has been especially pronounced over the past few years.'
Amnon Bar-Tur said: 'I am delighted to have established this new award with The Photographers’ Gallery and look forward to working with them over the next three years. I know from my own experience how important the right support and guidance can be - especially at such a crucial stage in student and graduates' development. The Bar-Tur Photobook Award aims to provide a significant platform to help launch young artists' careers.'
Hannah Watson, Director, Trolley Books said: Trolley Books are delighted to collaborate in the inaugural year of this new publishing venture. Without doubt photobook publishing is currently the most thriving and innovative photographic medium, and I am looking forward to seeing the talent and potential in the submissions.'
This Award was established with the generous support of the Bar-Tur family in memory of late wife and mother, the British artist Ann Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984).
