RPS Member in SWPA success

Industry news

RPS member Philip Joyce ARPS has been short-listed in the Sony World Photography Awards 2016. Philip's image Jump features in the Split-Second category. The pictures shows riders warming up before the Thame County Show.

Philip told The RPS: 'The shot was taken with a Canon 60D and a Sigma 10-20mm. I crouched down and placed the camera on the ground, pointing it up using live-view and the flip-out screen to compose the shot as best as possible. The slight shutter-lag on live-view meant composition was difficult so I just had to be patient and took quite a few shots until I got a 'shape' that looked good; the distant jumper was more to do with chance than a well executed 'decisive moment'! Nevertheless I was very pleased with the result and delighted that it has been shortlisted in its category.'

The image can be seen on the SWPA website and you can see more of Philip's photography on his personal website

The Sony World Photography Awards 2016 attracted a record number of entries – 230,103 images from 186 countries. All the selected images will be shown at Somerset House, London from 22 April–8 May 2016. Tickets are available here
