National Media Museum closure rumours
- Published 7th June 2013
A number of members have contacted The Society expressing concern at the possible closure of the National Media Museum, Bradford. As members will be aware the museum houses The Society's Collection of photographs, equipment, library and archives. The museum's collections are considered one of the most important for historical photography in the world.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is likely to face reduced funding in the forthcoming government spending review and this will inevitably impact on the Media Museum. Reports of the museum's closure are premature but the Director of the SMG, Ian Blatchford, has indicated that one of the museums in the SMG could close.
Bradford city council and others are looking at possible alternative sources of funding,
As an interested party and a strong supporter of the museum The Society will keep a watching brief on the situation as it develops. Firm proposals are unlikely before the autumn. In the meantime members might be interested in expressing their support for the National Media Museum by signing a petition here.
