- Know the Facts
The Society has launched a Know the Facts card for members to carry. The card is supported by the Association of Chief Police Officers and defines police stop and search rights under the Terrorism Act and has been circulated to all members within the United Kingdom, where the Terrorism act applies.
Whilst the number of incidents does appear to have reduced it is hoped that the card will be of assistance in any interaction with a police officer regarding photography. The card is intended to reduce any friction within such a situation and states that: we all need to be vigilant and support the police as well as protect our rights to photographing in a public place.
We also believe that the recent concerns and incidents have deterred some photographers form using their camera in situations where they should be free to photograph. We hope that the card will make these photographers more comfortable in pursuing their interest.
The card, which has received a positive response from other organisations, is for members only. The Society realises that the wording may be used elsewhere. However, neither the wording (supported by) relating to ACPO, nor their logo, may be used without permission of that organisation.
The Society continues to be engaged, along with other interested parties, in discussions relating the Terrorism Act and the interaction of the police with photographers.
