Statement of intent

below

Texture, form and shadows appear more intriguing from a high vantage point. Once back at street level, I am frequently disappointed by what I see.  Although this series began as a visual exploration of surfaces and matter viewed from an elevated position, I soon realised how, through the aesthetical choices I make, I am emphasising the anonymity, vulnerability and frequent isolation of humankind in an urban environment.  I seek locations with a strong graphical component and once I have found a high viewpoint, I wait for a figure or a few figures to punctuate the space in a way that suits my pre-visualisation.  I feel that these locations, combined with the elevated viewpoint and the use of high contrast black and white, give my images a detached feeling that accentuates the realities, which frequently describe the relationship between humans and their urban environments.
