I have worked all my professional life in Medical Scientific & Forensic Imaging. I am the principal author of the book entitled "A Colour Atlas of AIDS in the Tropics" which won the Lancet Award in 1990. My images have also been used by the Discovery Channel, BBC and Channel 4 to mention a few and widely published.

I am now semi-retired and live in the North West of England. I now enjoy my life long passion for photography as a hobby and when the opportunity allows travel photography. I frequently visit Africa, more particularly Kenya which is a paradise for photography.

I joined the RPS North West Region in 2002 and immediately got on the committee. I have now taken over as the RPS North West Regional Organiser.

Brian Smethurst LRPS

Involvement in photography began in the 60's with a Kodak Brownie and a bedroom darkroom. My interest continued to develop until it was interrupted by the needs of family life and my work as a chartered civil engineer taking me overseas for several years.

My passion was rekindled on my return to the UK, culminating in the award of LRPS in 2009.

I will photograph just about anything which captures my
imagination, but particularly enjoy travel photography.

Monochrome Photography has been my major hobby since the age of twelve, when my father gave me an old quarter plate camera (circa 1910), and I continued to use it until I could no longer obtain the roll film for it.

Education and a career in accountancy, however, took precedence and it was only in the early seventies that I had sufficient spare time to join my local photography club, Bramhall P.S. I was their Secretary for six years. In 1975 I became a member of the Royal Photographic Society, and since 1998 have been serving on the RPS North West Region Committee as Treasurer.

Andy Auty LRPS

Andy was awarded the RPS Licentiate Distinction in 2002. He concentrates on monochrome landscape and people photography using both traditional and digital techniques and one day hopes to achieve the Associateship. 

David Briggs ARPS

Committee Member

David Briggs ARPS, MCMI is the committee member with special interest for South Cumbria; he organises two events each year.

Ben Gorman ARPS

Ben was awarded the RPS Associateship Distinction in 2008. He has recently completed a two-year project photographing woodlands around the UK. His work is now focussed on landscape extracts and natural form.
