South West
Regional week away in North Wales
Sunday 27th. September.
The party went to Cwm Orthin quarry. We were greeted by very misty conditions which gave an atmosphere to the area, and the opportunity for some very moody images. As we walked up the valley the mist and low cloud began to clear which changed the atmosphere totally. We ventured around the buildings and then climbed up to Rhosydd Quarry which again has a different feel to Cwmorthin. Again, good images were there to be had and after exploring this area, we returned to the car park at Cwmorthin for the journey back to our respective residences.
Monday 28th. September.
Most of the group headed towards Snowdon, the exceptions being Derek and Carsta who stayed around the Betws-Y-Coed area. We parked at Pen-y-pass where Jenny, Margaret and Mick set off up the pyg track towards the summit. The weather was not particularly kind towards us, being low cloud, mist and an amount of precipitation, but the weather forecast had suggested better, so we hoped for an improvement. The others from the group set off for Llanberis to take the train to the summit to meet us, with some thinking in terms of walking back down. The weather had other ideas and the train to the summit encountered thick fog most of the way up and very little, if anything was seen on the way up. The intrepid walkers plodded on, through some breaks in the cloud occasionally. The railway passengers were advised their train departed in 30 minutes and seats could not be guaranteed if they did not take the train, so they decided they had to go back down. A fleeting glimpse of the walkers was seen nearing the top on the return train journey. Upon their return to Llanberis, a decision was made that part of the group would go to Portmerion and meet up later. The intrepid walkers made it to the top and duly posed for the photograph at the trig point, then went into the newly built cafe at the summit to drip and have a cup of tea and some lunch before setting off back down. The decision to go back down to Llanberis had been made before the ascent, so duly off we went. It became that foggy we followed the railway line for part of the way ensuring we did not wander off anywhere, until a point where the track crossed the footpath and we continued on down the footpath. By this time the mist had lifted a little, we then happened upon Coglan station where the bridge carries the railway over the footpath, and we were duly obliged with a steam train coming up the mountain. We stopped to take the obligatory photographs of the train, and whilst waiting, as if by magic, the curtains opened and we could see where we were heading. We then continued our trek downwards and upon getting down to Llanberis we were met by Mary in the car and taken to Pete's Eats in Llanberis for well deserved tea and cakes. The group then met later in the evening in The Roal Oak, to discuss the day and plan further adventures for the subsequent days.
Tuesday 29th. September
The group, with one exception took a ride down towards Beddgelert, we walked from just outside the town through the footpaths, into Beddgelert and then following the path to the Abergaslwn river, where we picked a somewhat tortuous way alongside the river, from where we climbed to open moorland to head back on a circular route to the carsparked near the Sygun Copper Mine. On the way we came across some interesting parts on the mine cable car system and a large winch which was obviously used to get the mining materials to the area for processing. The photograph of the group of this page was atken just before cresting the highest point of the day before the descent to the cars.
Wednesday 30th. September
Everybody went their own way for the day, Margaret travelled to Conwy Castle, Jenny and Mary visited Anglesey, Derek and Carsta went exploring a mining area, whilst the other 4 went to Llangolen Railway, taking the ride on the train after exploring the small town, whilst Mick had been invited to look around the engine sheds and workshops.
Thursday 1st. October
A very important day, is was Jenny's birthday, but no day of rest was called for. The weather was set fair so some climbing was in order. We set off to Ogwen, with the intention of at least some of us climbing Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach. The first part of the walk was very easy along a wide track, good easy walking, this got progressively more uneven until we reached a point where we had to cross a stream, or a bit more than a stream, which involved a little bit of a leap of faith. Jenny and Mick decided to carry on while the rest of the group decided to walk around the lake and photograph the lower areas. This part of the group the retired to Betws - y- Coed for tea and some retail therapy in some cases, whilst Jenny and Mick proceeded upwards through Devils Kitchen onto the top where we set off for Glyder Fawr, what a fantastic landscape this is, we boulder hopped in many places across to Glyder Fach after sitting behind a large rock for lunch and watching(and photographing) the steam train making it's way up Snowdon. It was good to see Snowdon as we had not seen it on Tuesday. We crossed Glyder Fach and set off downwards towards Tryfan, over a coll and made our way back to the one car that was left. The evening was spent in The Royal Oak having a very convivial birthday celebration for Jenny.
Friday 2nd. October
We met at the Conwy Falls car park, and paid £1 to go through the turnstile to vist the falls. A pleasant short walk down to the falls which were unspectacular due in part to not much water flowing. After returning to the top we set off for a circular walk through the woods, and around pleasant footpaths where we came upon Fairy Glen. You are on trust to pay the entry fee to this quite pleasant little area of woods and river. Some members of the party took the path down to river level after which we walked the lanes and came back to Conwy Falls car park where we took tea and cakes. We then all returned to our respective residences before eating and making our way to the cottage that Jenny and Mary had rented for a very pleasant evening looking at some images from the week and viewing the Cornish Celtic Challenge which Margaret had been to the Previous Saturday night. We then said our goodbyes as we were all moving on on Saturday, Derek and Carsta heading to The Lake District for a week, Martin and Viv taking the caravan to The Brecons for a couple of days and the rest of us heading homeward.
Our thanks go to Jenny for organising and looking after us for the week, I know she enjoyed her birthday on The Glyders. We are already talking a bout something next year perhaps with the Northumberlad area being suggested. When the images from all group members are uploaded you will get a flavour of our week but this is only a very small percentage of the images made.
