One of the exciting spin-offs of Bleeding London was alerting us to the potential of Instagram. Anyone under the age of 40 reading this will probably be thinking ‘Eh? Get with the programme’, but many of the London members – and probably many elsewhere within the Society – having vaguely heard of Instagram, had not really understood or used it. Instagram is essentially a photo-sharing platform, but the photos are taken and edited on mobile devices. Photos are in a square format and by adding one of the many the filters available, the photographer can add an atmospheric retro look to the images.
More than 3,000 pix from the project were Instagram based, and, under advice from our leading Instagrammers, we started a weekly competition - the winners can be seen in our Instagram Album. Although the photography part of the project has finished, the Bleeding London name lives on and we now have 5,071 photos carrying our hashtag (#bleedinglondon).
And for those of you who are still sceptical about Instagram, we don’t want to hear any mumblings about it not being proper photography – one of our members recently gained his Licentiateship with a panel comprised entirely of IG photos. You’ll be able to read about Keith’s journey to LRPS in a future issue of Capital Interest. In the meantime, you can see some of his and other IG’ers' work on display at the Bleeding London Exhibition between the 9th July and 14th August.
