“I’m Overwhelmed ...” were the opening words from the Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung, last night, as he officially opened the Capital Exposure Week exhibition put on by the Gang of 4 + 1 + Guest at the Merton Civic Centre.
I think we were all overwhelmed – it is a stunning show and it was a great first night..
The idea behind the exhibition came from Mike Roberts – whom many of you will remember as one of the Bleeding London winners. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and having had two strokes, Mike covered more than 2,000 streets for the project. He recently took the initiative to organise a local exhibition and secured the support of the Mayor and Council as well as obtaining exhibition space at the Merton Civic Centre.
Mike and four other Bleeding Londoners, who together did most of SW19 and SW20, then created an exhibition around their best images from the area – the “Gang of 4” are the four who live in SW19 and the “Plus One” is from SW20.
And the guest? That was none other than Duncan Grove FRPS, who has kindly loaned his exquisite Wimbledon Fellowship panel to the exhibition.
The Mayor’s speech was quite emotional and using quotations from the book Bleeding London, by Geoff Nicholson, he shared his views of London, which he described as “the most beautiful city on the planet”.
And there’s more good news – as a result of this exhibition, Morden Library has asked the Gang of 4 +1 to provide images for digital displays in all of its seven libraries.
Congratulations to Barry Akid, Dick Halle, Judy Hicks LRPS, Mike Roberts, Sarah Smith LRPS and Duncan Grove FRPS for a splendid and impressive show. Big thanks too, to their friends and families, who helped behind the scenes.
The show runs until the 9th November at 2nd Floor, Heritage & Studies Centre, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, SM4 5DX. Details of opening times here.
Full details of Capital Exposure Week can be found here and a handy guide can be downloaded from here.
Tonight we’ll be in Croydon and look forward to seeing you there!
