The Monday Muse Week 10

02 November 2015

Region: London

The latest weekly amusement from RPS London.  This week, our muse is the second in a series based on the colour wheel.

Today’s Muse is the second in a series based on colour and this week we’re looking for triads.

For the great photographers who were painters or studied art before turning to photography, colour theory is second nature.  For the rest of us, thankfully, there is the colour wheel, which can be downloaded from the web or purchased in art shops.  We like the cardboard ones that identify the shade, tone and tint of the pure colours and provide an attached wheel, which can be spun around, for easy identification of the different relationships.  Our second colour Muse is the triads – every fourth colour on the wheel.

We’re not particularly looking for images using only three colours, but rather those where a triad of colour is predominant.  A widely used triad in advertising and promotion that of red, yellow and blue, and a good example can be found in Viktoria Binschtok’s cluster series.  And we have bonus points on offer this week.  Binschtok’s work is based on finding on-line pix that are “associated” with her own images; we’ll be giving bonus points to anyone who shares a screenshot of their associated images.  To do this, go to Google images, click the camera icon in the search box and upload an image.  Google will then return a set of images that are ‘visually similar’ to yours.  You can see the results of our search below – from coffee-cup to plumbing components.  Using this reverse search is also a very handy way of finding out if any of your images are being used on websites without your permission.

The Monday Muse is an ongoing initiative.  There are no deadlines and you don’t have to take the photographs in the week that the Muse is set.  Once you’ve set up your album, you can add to it any time.  A list of previous Muses can be found here.

Monday Muse Info

As the inspirational ideas we posted as part of the Bleeding London project proved to be so popular, we’re going to continue the theme with The Monday Muse.  Every Monday, we’ll be posting an inspirational idea for the week, with links to tips and suggestions on how to achieve the best images.  We’ll be featuring our favourites here on the blog and in our monthly eZine Capital Interest.  And just to add a bit of competition, we’ll be running a points league.  There is one point for posting an image and there will be occasional bonus points.  At the end of the year, whoever has the most points will receive a gift voucher to spend in the RPS shop.
