Region: South West
The Portland Heights Hotel was the chosen venue for the weekend which began on Friday evening. Paul Sanders also joined us for the weekend at the invitation of the Region. After dinner some of the attendees showed us some print work to the rest of the group.
Saturday morning dawned wet and foggy, so some plans were hastily rearranged with Paul Sanders showing the first of his two presentations. This told the story of his early photographic years, starting work on local newspapers, and moving around until he became the picture editor of The Times. He included in this talk some of the discussions that were had between himself and the editor of The Times and the way that newspapers worked to get images to press.
The weather had improved by this time and we were able to get out, most people heading to Portland Bill to make some images. A lot spent time around the Pulpit Rock area to capture the waves crashing around the base. The lighthouse did get some attention from the cameras also, and The Lobster Pot cafe seemed quite popular for those wishing for hot drinks and something to eat. The group members then drifted off to other areas for photography, including photographing some runners in a challenge race around the Isle of Portland.
The evening started with a superb dinner followed by part two of Paul Sanders presentation, which showed us his own work and told us of how he runs his own courses in addition to working for Light and Land as one of their tutors.
More of the attendees work was then shown before retiring for the night.
Sunday morning was bright and sunny for a little while, with some people managing to get out and do a bit of photography before breakfast. Several of the group left on Sunday morning, with those staying on for another night setting off to try to do some more photography, before another congenial evening meal and an opportuniy to view some digital presentations from the group.
We must thank Paul Sanders for travelling to Portland and for the way he spoke about his work and for helping anyone with any queries and to The Portland Heights Hotel for looking after us so well.
An album has been created which will show some images from photographers as they are sent to us and will show a record of the weekend activities.
