Field trip to Dartmoor with Leigh Preston FRPS

31 May 2016

Region: South West

As part of the weekend with Leigh, Saturday was spent on Dartmoor. We met at Hound Tor car park and due to the misty conditions, visited Holwell Lawn first to have a look at the bluebells. Whilst generally they were past their best, a lot of images were captured using the trees and walls in the area. We then strolled back towards Hound Tor where lunch was taken, before having a look at the rock formations and again capturing images. The day ended with a walk to Bowermans Nose area, where attendees took off in different directions to make their photographs.

We thank Leigh for his help and assistance to all attendees, pointing out things which many people would not have considered, and for his chat to a guy called Julian who sat in his van and who ended up being photographed by some of the group, and later on to a family group to whom he chatted and again persuaded to have their photographs taken.

Sunday was based in the Dolphin Hotel, where Leigh spent the day showing images and helping attendees with advice on making panels and what he called "real photography". This was all undertaken with his usual brand of humour which kept the audience entertained.

Thanks to Leigh for giving up his weekend to run this workshop.

You will also see below a selection of images from the attendees at the Hound Tor field trip day, please do comment on them and any other comments you may have on the weekend.

Great weekend! Leigh's wise words about 'seeing not looking' have resonated with me ever since too. The shots above have mixtures of interesting lines and perspectives all being 'seen' by different eyes as the shots were composed. Looking forward to the next one now :-)

What a great weekend we had. The weather was good, the company excellent and Leigh was his usual self, giving sensible no nonsense help. Again on the Sunday his well prepared talk firstly covered the ability to see a picture. This was followed by the making stage which was the production and use of the pictures. All illustrated by examples of his and others work. Later Leigh went on to discuss and give advice about panels. This was to the point and I did hear the word inspirational mentioned by some of the attendees.
The images above are enjoyable to look at bring back memories of the day.

It looks like it was a good day with some interesting images being produced. There are few better places than Dartmoor either in the rain or sun!

What a variety. I continue to be astounded that so may people can go to one place and come away with such different shots. Mick - I love the green fern growing through the burnt gorse. I real life after death shot. I like the wriggly tree trunk too - good idea to not show the top of it.
