As a non-member as well as beginner, I was initially nervous about going to the RPS meet up of its Documentary Group and Southern Region in Winchester, but needn’t have worried.
Everyone with an interest in photography is welcome at the RPS meet-ups; the group was friendly and the afternoon was well worth the trip from Chichester.
The very attractive city of Winchester is a draw in itself, especially with its Christmas market and ice rink in full swing.
We were given a challenge, to submit an image that captured the pre-Christmas spirit in this medieval city – and set off in small groups to explore, agreeing to catch up after a couple of hours to share experiences over a cup of coffee.
I consider myself a novice photographer, still a bit overwhelmed by the complexities and the apparent ostentatiousness of my new DSLR in relation to my iPhone.
The benefit of being in a group was that, it was a real treat to have the opportunity to walk around the City with someone much more experienced, learning more about the RPS as well as photography. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and I learned a lot.
If, like me, you'd like to join a photoshoot but aren't sure what to expect, or if you're a seasoned photographer looking to meet a few more like-minded souls, the RPS offers opportunities to learn, share and generally enjoy exploring. They know some interesting haunts too!
The next Meetup is a breakfast shoot, just after Christmas – I’m in! :-)
