About Us

Welcome to the Yorkshire Region web pages of the RPS web site.

The Region covers a wide and diverse area, stretching from the high Pennine Moors in the west through to the varied and attractive coastal landscapes in the east and from the West and South Yorkshire urban conurbations in the south to the rolling landscapes of the North Yorkshire plains and North York Moors in the north.

Of course the rugged east coastline also offers plenty of picture opportunities and for bird lovers we are fortunate in having the RSPB reserve at Bempton for seabird enthusiasts.

As well as including the cities of Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds and York the region includes areas of the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

At the moment the region has circa 450 members and it is fair to say that between them they cover just about every aspect of the photographic spectrum.

We have an enthusiastic Regional Organiser in Mary Crowther ARPS who keeps things on the move with the help of an active and hard-working committee.

Mary can be contacted on e-mail at: photobox50@gmail.com and by phone on:

Yorkshire camera folk getting set

to put Chatsworth in the picture

Here's a date for your diary – a not-to-be-forgotten outing and a chance to bag some top notch pictures.

Regional Organiser Mary Crowther has managed to get permission for RPS members to photograph art works in the gardens at Chatsworth House with the help of Sotheby's, the auctioneers, who stage this top-class event.

The day of Photography will feature Sotheby's exhibition, Beyond Limits, on Sunday, October 4, between 11am and 4.30pm. The show is one of the top events of its kind in the country and has featured work by leading sculptors such as Damien Hirst and Thomas Heatherwick (designer of the London Olympic cauldron) both having had their work displayed there.

Various items are spread out around the estate gardens and show some of the most original works of monumental art being made in this day and age.

Anyone who is interested should contact organiser Mary Crowther, photobox50@gmail.com or phone 07921237962 for more details.

HIVE of industry in Harrogate for YPS

The Yorkshire Region has been invited to take part in the Harrogate International Visual Arts Expo 2015 (HIVE) which is proudly sponsored by: Artfinder.com and Artists & Illustrators' Magazine.

The region's official charity partner is National Open Art Competition who will be featured at the expo with a finalists' exhibition. Take a look at www.HarrogateArtExpo.com for more information about the show.

Yorkshire Regional Organiser Mary Crowther said: “This would be a wonderful opportunity to promote both the RPS and the Yorkshire Region. It would be hopeful to have a display at the exhibition of between 15 or 20 photographic images.

I am inviting all Yorkshire members to bring work along to the Café Session in Leeds on Saturday, September 26, or email images to photobox50@gmail.com

Alternatively if you wish to post or deliver prints please contact myself by either email or telephone to make arrangements.”

She added: “All applications should arrive by Friday, October 2, 2015, with your name, membership number, title of picture on the reverse side, bottom left corner. There is no restriction on subject matter or style of photography.”

All submitted images received would be considered collectively by a selected group of individuals as to which ones are to be exhibited at the show.

After that all final images selected will need to be produced as a print with sizes and mount sizes to be advised after the selection process.

Laura's Northern gig

Change of Date: New date Friday 9th October 2015.

Laura Pannack is a London based Photographer. Educated at the University of Brighton, Central Saint Martins College of Art and LCC but you can see her in Yorkshire on Friday, October 9, this year when she appears at the University of Huddersfield, Queen's Gate, Huddersfield at 7pm.

Her work has been extensively exhibited and published both in the UK and internationally, including at The National Portrait Gallery, The Houses of Parliament, Somerset House, and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

In 2010 Laura received first prize in the Portrait Singles category of the World Press Photo awards. She has also won and been shortlisted for several other awards including The Sony World Photography Awards, The Magenta foundation and Lucies IPA.

She was recently awarded the Vic Odden by The Royal Photographic Society award for a notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer aged 35 or under.

Her art focuses on social documentary and portraiture, and seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer.

Laura is driven by research led self-initiated projects. In her own words, she does all she can “to understand the lives of those captured, and to present them creatively”. Her images aim to suggest the shared ideas and experiences that are entwined in each frame that she shoots.

‘Laura’s remarkable ability to build trust and respect with her subjects allows her to express a gritty vulnerability that is as sincere as it is elusive to capture.’
