SIG: Archaeology and Heritage

We are delighted to find out that Archaeology & Heritage Group’s member, Gavin McGuire, has won three of the five categories at the American Institute of Archaeology photography competition.

The Group’s journal Heritage Photography, recently featured an article by Gavin about a long-term photographic project he is working on in Crete.

The 2018 AIA Photo Contest saw over 150 photos taken in 25 different countries pour in as members and friends of the AIA shared their archaeological experiences through photos in five categories: archaeological landscapes, excavation, field life, fun finds, and monuments. See the article online here.

Gavin McGuire is a New Zealand archaeologist and resident photographer with the Belgian School Athens - Université catholique de Louvain, working at a major Minoan excavation in Sissi, Crete. He has been involved in a long-term (2009-2022) photographic project to image the daily human interaction with the ancient past at the 4,000 year old settlement.
