Exhibition in Somaliland

SIG: Documentary

RPS and DG member, and tutor on the documentary story telling workshop, Alison Baskerville is in Somaliland with an exhibition that has been commissioned by the Hargeisa Book Fair - http://www.hargeysabookfair.com/2015/.  The work is part of the first Women of the World festival to happen in the Horn of Africa - http://wow.southbankcentre.co.uk/

 

Somaliland is an example of an area that exists with a low threat from Al Shabaab - a stark contrast to their neighbours in Somalia.  This has led to a certain sense of freedom enjoyed by some of the women in Hargeisa - although patriarchal culture and a greater following of Wahhabism still restricts freedom for women.
