About this image

Extreme close-up view of the head of a Yellow Paper Wasp. Paper wasps belong in the genus Polistes, with over 300 known species. Many species build their nests on human habitation, while not normally aggressive paper wasps will defend their nests vigorously. This image is part of a series investigating our often-overlooked housemates, a result of the expansion of our habitat into rural areas, and is a composite of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
