About this image

Colourised light micrograph showing a section of a prepared sample of nanoparticles. The nanoparticles are made from PMMA, or poly (methyl methacrylate), and appear as tiny dark spots in the upper part of the image and in the red area below. The yellow areas are remnants of the liquid suspension stabiliser from the manufacturing process, the blue-grey area is a silicon substrate. The nanoparticles are about 190 nanometres wide, the piece of the sample seen here is about 800 micrometres across. Nanoparticles are being studied as possible drug-delivery agents as they can be treated to carry chemicals to specific cell types within the body. This image was captured using a Zeiss Axiophot 2 microscope under bright-field contrast illumination, then later digitally colourised.
