Mara's statement for her panel submission. The Ghost ProjectWhat lies just outside of our vision? Are there ghosts all around us, just out of sight? Are they lost souls, hiding just outside our normal vision? What if we could see them? If I died tomorrow what would my ghost do? Where would it go?At the start of 2012 I came face to face with the very real possibility of becoming the last surviving member of my family when my mother became critically ill with cancer. On the outside I knew I needed to be strong for her but inside I was like a tempest. As I struggled with the prospect of a future with no living family, I questioned what might lie after death. If ghosts are echoes of our perceived identities I wondered what my ghost would do, where it might go and why. I started exploring my ideas using my camera to 'capture' my own ghost. Gradually I realised my psyche was working through the turmoil inside using my camera as a window. As I started to recognise my emotions and feelings in the images I discovered that my ‘ghost’ had been reflecting my inner mind before I was consciously aware of my thoughts. Acting as a form of guide into my own mind rather than just an exploration of ideas. With this realisation I decided to allow the project to run free with my hidden memories and buried feelings, trusting in my subconscious to lead me.All the images are self portraits and each contains a facet of my past, connecting to my lost family or an aspect of my emotions associated with them. These images and this project have become my guide, showing me parts of myself I hadn't really known before.
