Statement of Intent:Throughout Britain’s history, the rich and powerful were painted by artists in magnificent portraits, whilst lowly foot soldiers and working people were largely ignored. My portfolio represents photographic art in the style of the grand paintings and recognises the contribution to history made by these ordinary folk. These colourful characters have been presented as the old masters would have painted them in classical poses typical of the era. I have researched and photographed each specific element in every portrait to authenticate the subject in the appropriate environment. In a photographic parallel with the old masters, I have ‘painted’ each portrait by adding pixels to a blank digital canvas. Through the use of modern software, I have assembled the visual elements of the finished image to replicate the colours, designs and construction of multiple point perspectives and foreshortened compositions made popular by Renaissance and Victorian painters at the time.
