11 Primula Viallii
Statement of IntentHeat-Pressed FlowersMy passion is for flowers, with their infinite variety of shape and colour. I have attempted to combine this with my preference for photographs which are relatively abstract. My challenge was to present the flowers as abstract forms, but nevertheless to portray their essential characteristics. To enable this, I devised a method of pressing the flowers between glass in a microwave oven. This preserves the colour of the flower for a short time, and allows it to be photographed quickly.Backlighting creates an x-ray effect and shows more of the structure of the flower. Bubbles of air and moisture are often trapped by the pressing process, and I endeavour to incorporate these in the image. Many of the flowers I prefer are extremely small and the photographs are macro images, taken at up to ten times magnification.
